Fostering Resilience Learners - a 5-hour asynchronous seminar for all educators

More than 25 percent of American youth experience a serious traumatic event by their sixteenth birthday, and many children suffer multiple and repeated traumas which can seriously impact their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development. Staff may be unaware of the specific traumatic events that have occurred with each child, and school environments may inadvertently compound the impacts of trauma. Creating resilience-fostering environments in school can lower the impact of trauma and enhance the factors that provide the foundation for better health, academic success, and positive interactions. When school staff learn effective responses to student trauma and how to help instill resiliency skills necessary to thrive in the classroom, children have better learning outcomes - in school and in life. Register in Frontline for the online seminar  Fostering Resilient Learners and earn 5 CTLE hours upon successful completion.

ELT online seminars are convenient and flexible to accommodate the needs of busy educators.

This 5-hour asynchronous seminar offers SEL strategies for all educators

Growing up today is not easy. Children’s bodies and brains are rapidly growing and changing. They are assailed with new ideas, technology and peer/social/media influences daily. Many students today are distracted, under immense pressure and suffer from mental health issues more than ever before. Before students can be successful academically, their social and emotional needs must be met. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is a critical part of a child’s development as it is the process by which they acquire and apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes to increase self-awareness and self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. SEL focuses on the competencies that underscore one’s ability to be available to learn. Nurturing students’ social and emotional development will help them acquire skills to effectively deal with stress. Students who can manage their emotions, control their impulses, focus their attention, and calm themselves will be able to learn and achieve academically. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Teaching the Whole Child provides an excellent overview of SEL and offers many evidence based SEL strategies that all staff can embed directly within any learning moment.

ELT online seminars are convenient and flexible to accommodate the needs of busy educators.

This seminar can be used toward fulfilling Continuing Teacher & Leader Education (CTLE) requirements as NYSUT ELT is an approved provider.

What will school schedules look like when the new academic year commences in September? Which teaching methods are appropriate for continued school building closure? How can teachers compensate for the “COVID melt” or the “COVID slide” and meet students where they are academically and take them where they need to go? Whether based on the effects of trauma, the impact of the digital divide or differences in access to educational supports, any lost learning time from distance-learning is detrimental to students and will worsen if not immediately addressed.
ELT has compiled a lengthy list of valuable training, from graduate courses to in-person and online seminars, on critical topics so educators are prepared to engage, instruct, assess, and support students where they are.

    • Assessment as a Tool - determining where students are and where they need to be.
    • Differentiating Instruction and Curriculum for Learner Needs - meeting the learning needs of all students, including vulnerable students who may have had limited or insufficient exposure to remote learning opportunities.
    • Interdisciplinary Teaching - bringing curricular programming into line to meet students where they are and transitioning students from online/remote learning back to in-person learning in a classroom.
    • Social Emotional Supports - addressing the emotional and mental health needs of students and staff and providing support, as needed.
    • Technology Training - equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills to expand the possibilities for teaching and learning.

In compliance with New York State Education Department, NYSUT Education & Learning Trust has been approved as a sponsor to provide professional development for Continuing Teacher Leader Education (CTLE) hours.
