As students and educators gear up for the 2020-2021 school year, they will be forever changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools must support the emotional well-being of students so learning can begin. Teachers require technology that is responsive and flexible for student-centered learning, whether that is fully online, in person or a mix of both. ELT is rolling out training to empower educators to successfully engage with students across multiple teaching models.

Designed for all educators in the school community, Transforming the Lives of Students with Trauma-Informed Schools addresses how trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact students’ abilities to form trusting relationships, learn new concepts and self-regulate their behaviors in and out of school. The impact of early trauma on brain development and early attachment will be explored. While the topics addressed are relevant for supporting and sustaining the needs of ALL students, time will be spent examining trauma specifically experienced by ELLs such as the impact of prior experiences, pre-flight, flight and post-flight, and how to create a safe and supportive environment that is conducive to learning. The ideas presented will provide a new lens through which to see maladaptive behaviors and provide the necessary tools and strategies to support student healing and growth, both academically and social-emotionally.

Technology has the power to fundamentally change and even reinvent how instruction is delivered, as well as how we provide appropriate instruction for students with a wide variety of needs. However, technology, like any other tool, requires knowing how and when to use it in order to maximize its efficacy and provide opportunities for true inquiry. In Redesigning Teaching Through Instructional Technology, you will explore K-12 appropriate models for working with ALL students (e.g. ELLs and students with disabilities), demonstrating when and how to strategically use technology in any scenario (e.g. classroom, hybrid, distance learning, etc.), as well as standards-based best practices for fundamentally redesigning instruction using technology across the curriculum. NOTE: This training will mainly focus on the purposeful and strategic deployment of technology to transform instruction. The online seminar, “Web-based Tools to Boost Instruction in the Classroom, Hybrid, and Distance/Remote Learning Scenarios”, will provide participants the opportunity to learn about and practice with web-based tools and digital learning resources.

With social distancing paramount at this time and in the near future, NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust (ELT) is committed to making sure our members’ health is top priority while providing graduate programs. Our summer course work has been approved via our college partners to continue delivery of graduate content via a remote learning environment.

Per regulations, we will continue to provide top quality, research-based, practical learning and adhere to course guidelines, requirements, and syllabus. Registrants, please look for correspondence from your instructor prior to course onset.

We are proud to be a CTLE provider and confident our participants will have the educational experience they need in order to increase student achievement.

With increased member calls to NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust (ELT) wanting more online, certification courses, ELT has added a third session to Summer Semester 2020. The session dates will run from July 20 – September 25. Registration is now open and will close on July 16, 2020 at midnight.

In an ever-shifting political and regulatory environment, teachers have more responsibility than ever before to not only teach but advocate for ELLs and their families. Advocating for ELLs Within the Scope of State and Federal Law will familiarize participants with laws and regulations regarding ENL education both historically and in the present day, as well as those laws and regulations that are germane to many ELLs and their families, including but not limited to issues related to immigration and civil rights. Furthermore, participants will learn of support services available to ELLs and best practices in advocacy.

Supporting and Sustaining the Social-Emotional Needs of English Learners Who Experience Trauma is available as both a three-hour and six-hour site-based seminar that is geared for all educators (teachers, school-related professionals, school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, administrators, nurses, etc.)

While training on trauma is applicable across all student, this seminar adds the lens of the unique experiences that English learners face. The seminar provides tools for educators in recognizing and dealing with trauma-informed behaviors, establishing a supportive school environment for social and emotional healing, and building trusting relationships with this fragile cohort.

The Dignity Act requires that all students in New York state public schools are afforded an environment free of discrimination and harassment (Education Law §10). ELT is now able to offer the 6-hour DASA training entirely online during the time period of the state of emergency in New York State for the COVID-19 virus.
