Understanding Trauma and Supporting Traumatized Students

Increasingly our students experience exposure to multiple or prolonged traumatic events, such as child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence. This experience directly affects their social and emotional development and negatively impacts their behavior and academic growth in school. It is becoming more common that school staff is faced with the challenges of connecting with, and educating, students who have endured complex trauma. Often, the hurt that is felt by the student is transferred to the school personnel and it can manifest in a variety of ways. This seminar will engage participants in understanding the roots of trauma, its prevalence and causes, the characteristics and associated behaviors, as well as learning how to work with traumatized students in a proactive and positive way.

Supporting and Sustaining the Social-Emotional Needs of English Learners Who Experience Trauma is a three-hour site-based seminar that is geared for all educators (teachers, school-related professionals, school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, administrators, nurses, etc.)

While training on trauma is prevalent in many parts of the state, the niche for this seminar will be looking at it through the unique experiences of English learners. The seminar provides tools for educators in recognizing and dealing with trauma-informed behaviors, establishing a supportive school environment for social and emotional healing, building trusting relationships with this fragile cohort.

ELT in collaboration with the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is excited to offer new LGBTQ seminars to educators

Inclusive Curriculum: Incorporating LGBTQ Topics into the Classroom
GLSEN Research found that LGBTQ students who attend schools with curriculum that is inclusive of LGBTQ people, history, and events have more accepting schools and better academic outcomes. ( https://www.glsen.org/article/2017-national-school-climate-survey-1 ) Furthermore, inclusive curriculum can benefit all students by exposing them to more inclusive and accurate accounts of history and promoting respect. This seminar provides educators with GLSEN's resources and LGBTQ-inclusive lessons that can be integrated into their existing curriculum. The goal of the seminar is to better understand the benefits of inclusive curriculum for all students and to provide awareness of tools and resources that align with current mandates yet enrich instruction for all students. (2 or 3 hour seminar)

Creating Safer Spaces for LGBTQ Students
This seminar encourages discussions and provides a deeper awareness of the supports needed for LGBTQ students to thrive. We will review national statistics from GLSEN's 2017 National School Climate Survey (https://www.glsen.org/article/2017-national-school-climate-survey-1), share resources and tools for creating an inclusive school environment, and focus on how educators can create classrooms free of bullying and harassment for LGBTQ students (2 or 3 hour seminar)

New Mindfulness in the Classroom Seminar for Teachers and Teaching Assistants

Mindfulness in the Classroom
Participants will explore the definition of mindfulness and how it relates to whole child instruction in the classroom. Scenarios and strategies will be used to introduce techniques that will address trauma and other factors that may lead to stress felt by today's students and/or educators. The seminar's interactive activities will model how these techniques can be implemented in a teacher's practice. The content will be mindful of the diverse learners and backgrounds present in a classroom. Participants will have an opportunity to prepare next steps needed to integrate mindfulness into their daily routines. (3 hour seminar)

ELT has just rolled out a 5 hour online seminar that is perfect for elementary teachers, content area teachers and ENL teachers who are co-teaching in an Integrated ENL classroom.

What do teachers need to know and do prior to stepping in front of students as a co-teaching team? Participants of Establishing an Optimal Co-teaching Classroom with English Learners in Mind will learn how to create a positive relationship by building a foundation for collaboration, welcoming the strengths and contributions each teacher brings to the partnership, and exploring ways to establish a presence where there is trust and respect. Through the co-teaching models for various classroom environments, participants will gain planning strategies to aid all students to learn at higher levels.

ELT’s Fall catalog of Professional Learning Courses and Seminars offers online and face-to-face courses for graduate, undergraduate and inservice credit as well as seminars. Many courses may be used to satisfy degree requirements as well as electives. The ELT catalog is downloadable, shareable and offers plenty of opportunities for professional development.

ELT Rolls Out Three New Graduate Courses

Starting in September, ELT will be offering three additional courses that are available for three graduate credits or 45 hours of inservice credit.

Creating the Dynamic Classroom Environment (CURI 6560 SUNY Empire State College) - Participants will explore the extensive research base behind classroom management and work to create a classroom management plan that will provide a foundation on which to build instruction for the rest of the school year.

Making Thinking Visible in the Classroom (CURI 6562 SUNY Empire State College) - This course is an introduction to the theories proposed from the program called Project Zero at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. It is an introduction to the eight cultural forces that are found in educational settings.

Professional Learning for Teacher Effectiveness (CURI 6564 SUNY Empire State College) - This course focuses on enhancing teacher effectiveness by exploring research-based theories and best practices that correlate to the New York State Teaching Standards. With a spotlight on teacher practice, participants experience the specific methods, strategies, and activities that ensure “Highly Effective” performance in all professional domains.

NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust (ELT) has been approved as a CTLE provider. Participants successfully completing courses and seminars offered by ELT will receive a certificate of completion with ELT’s sponsor identification number to be used toward CTLE hour fulfillment.

On Tuesday, July 2nd, ELTs Fall 2018 courses and seminars will be available for registration on Frontline Professional Learning. NYSUT members will receive a 33% discount off the prices listed in Frontline at the time of registration for both online and site-based courses taken for either graduate or inservice credit.
