Mercy University 

NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust (NYSUT ELT) and Mercy University have partnered to deliver an online graduate education program and Advanced Certificate programs to NYSUT members with flexible schedules at an affordable cost. NYSUT members can obtain a graduate degree and/or fulfill state certification requirements online. You do not need to be located within miles of a Mercy campus. Now, all members across the state can take advantage of this opportunity!

Master of Science in Education and Advanced Certificate Programs

The NYSUT Education and Learning Trust and The United Federation of Teachers, in collaboration with Mercy University invite you to participate in a 15-credit (maximum) program designed to lead to one of several different Master of Science in Education degrees from Mercy University as well as certification from the New York State Education Department. These courses may lead to a Master of Science degree and certification in one of the following programs:

Early childhood and childhood programs:
Early Childhood Education, Birth - Grade 2, Master's Degree
Childhood Education, Grade 1 - Grade 6, Master's Degree

Literacy, TESOL, and Bilingual Ed. Programs:
Teaching Literacy, Birth - Grade 12, Master's Degree 
Teaching Literacy, Birth - Grade 6, Advanced Certificate 
Teaching Literacy, Grade 5 - Grade 12, Advanced Certificate 
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Master's Degree 
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Advanced Certificate 
Bilingual Extension Program, Extension Certificate

Secondary Ed. programs:
Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12), Master's Degree

Special Ed. Programs:
Teaching Students with Disabilities in Early Childhood and Childhood, Master's Degree 
Teaching Students with Disabilities, Birth - Grade 6 and Early Childhood, Master's Degree 
Teaching Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist, Advanced Certificate
Teaching Students with Disabilities Early Childhood and Childhood, Advanced Certificate

Program participants have an opportunity to earn up to 15 education credits for the M.S. programs and up to 3-6 credits for the Advanced Certificate programs and apply successfully completed courses toward a Mercy University graduate program. ELT/UFT offers these courses as part of a diverse degree program. A discount of 40% for NYSUT ELT Courses only is applicable to active dues paying UFT/NYSUT members (currently $822), which includes a $50 registration fee. There will be a $50 administration fee for cancelling your participation in a class. Students will be charged 2 weeks prior to the start of class. ELT Tuition rates are subject to change by the Trust.

On-campus reduced tuition rate

Once matriculated, NYSUT Members are entitled to a one-third tuition scholarship, based upon the existing tuition rate. Currently, students who are entitled to this reduced tuition rate are paying $2,090 per 3-credit course. Tuition rates are subject to change by the university.

NOT ALL LISTED COURSES APPLY TO EACH MASTER’S DEGREE. Consult your individual program plan to select your required courses.

Partnership Overview:

ELT courses are offered online so students can complete the required courses in a few semesters or spread them over a longer period.

After completing the required course(s) with NYSUT with a B or better average, students formally apply to the university for matriculation into one of the partnership programs at https://www.mercy.edu/admissions-aid/graduate-application. These courses are available to NYSUT members pursuing a master’s degree and Advanced Certificate programs as well as those members interested in individual courses only (i.e., not pursuing the full degree program).

IMPORTANT:

  • Only 5 NYSUT ELT courses can be applied to a Master’s partnership program with Mercy University. (1-2 for Advanced Certificate, depending on the program).
  • Remaining courses are taken online through Mercy after successful matriculation.
  • (10 - 15) hours Field Work is required.

Students are not eligible to register for a Mercy sponsored course through NYSUT ELT or UFT if they:

  • have already completed 15 Mercy University credits through NYSUT ELT or UFT.
  • are currently matriculated into a Mercy University degree or Advanced Certificate Program.
  • are on a financial hold with Mercy University, or
  • were academically dismissed by Mercy University.

ELT is not responsible for reimbursement of tuition for students who register for any Mercy courses if they meet any of the above criteria.

Be mindful: New York State regulation (effective Fall of 2016) requires that all graduate schools of education require a 3.0 GPA.
