Learn to address the needs of all students

And earn CTLE hours

Today’s classrooms are more diverse than ever, and teachers must rise to meet the needs of all learners. NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust offers educators courses on how to work effectively with students, meeting their special needs.

Here, we have identified four courses to help teachers get up to speed on the latest research and best practices for teaching students with disabilities. Courses are offered virtually, and each is worth CTLE hours or fulfills NYS requirements.

All courses are discounted for NYSUT members.

Educators can also earn CTLE hours at six regional learning centers. These classes are organized by local union leaders and offered free of charge to NYSUT members.

According to the CDC, the percentage of children ages 3-17 years diagnosed with a developmental disability increased from 16.2 percent in 2009-2011 to 17.8 percent in 2015-2017. And yet, New York state is facing a shortage of special education teachers.

Earn your Teaching Students with Disabilities certification and you could help ensure that all children’s educational needs are met. The certification will also make you more competitive in today’s employment landscape.

Developmental disabilities can include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, blindness, cerebral palsy, learning disability and hearing loss.

NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust and Mercy College have partnered to make it easier than ever for teachers to pursue certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities in Early Childhood and Childhood through its expanded online program. NYSUT members are eligible for a 40 percent discount on tuition for qualifying courses. The program requires 42 total credits to complete.
