Make classrooms more equitable

And earn CTLE hours

NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust offers educators resources and tips on how to support the growth and learning of all students, no matter their background or identity.

Here, we have identified four seminars to help teachers get up to speed on the latest research and best practices for making education equitable. Seminars are offered online, and each is worth five CTLE hours. All seminars are discounted for NYSUT members

Educators can also earn CTLE hours at six regional learning centers. These classes are organized by local union leaders and offered free of charge to NYSUT members.

Equity in All Classrooms provides teachers with a framework for implementing more equitable instruction practices in their classrooms. This course makes the critical link between social justice and Universal Design for Learning. Students can’t meet expectations equally when teachers use a ‘one size fits all’ approach. To address this, consider adopting the NYSUT UDL framework in your lesson planning, said Franca Fiorentino, ELT instructor and member of the Bellmore Merrick United Secondary Teachers. UDL helps teachers identify multiple options for engagement, representation and expression, that will still meet all curriculum goals. “If kids can’t do it the way you want, maybe they can do it differently, and still end up at the same point,” explained Fiorentino.
