School counselors are in high demand across New York state. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 10 percent growth in school counseling jobs between now and 2031, faster than average for occupations.
The reasons are manifold. Mental health issues among youth are on the rise. School counselors also improve academic outcomes by helping improve attendance, increasing test scores, enhancing graduation rates, and smoothing out transitions for immigrant and refugee students.
NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust has partnered with multiple institutions across New York including College of Saint Rose, Adelphi, Russell Sage College, and Empire State College to earn 60 required credits for certification as a School Counselor. NYSUT members are eligible for a 40 percent discount on tuition for qualifying courses.
