Learn about developmental disabilities and how you can help

Children with developmental disabilities deserve to be understood and appreciated. They may need special assistance to succeed in classrooms and we as educators are here to help. Here, we have identified three seminars designed to familiarize educators with developmental disabilities as well as the research-based teaching strategies for supporting students. Seminars are offered online asynchronously, and each is worth five CTLE hours. All seminars are discounted for NYSUT members.

For maximum flexibility, ELT also makes online courses available on in-demand topics like developmental disabilities through a platform called Virtual Education Software, Inc. (VESi). VESi courses are available for download and worth up to 2 graduate credits. Here are four seminars that address:

Educators can also earn CTLE hours at six regional learning centers. These classes are organized by local union leaders and offered free of charge to NYSUT members.

Ready to earn your Master’s in Adolescent Special Education, but don't know where to start?

 

NYSUT's Education & Learning Trust (ELT), in partnership with SUNY Empire State College (ESC), offers members a path to pursue an additional NYS certification in Students with Disabilities through its expanded online program.  Applicants to the online M.Ed. program in Adolescent Special Education are required to possess at minimum an initial teaching certificate in NYS and be currently teaching. NYSUT offers numerous core courses for this program, all of which are discounted for union members.

 

Introduction to History of Special Education Law provides teachers with a comprehensive overview of the history of education law and the education of students with disabilities. Students will be introduced to the role and responsibilities of the special education teacher in their legal obligation to the exceptional student.
