WHAT: Professional learning seminars to improve student learning and enhance professional practices in education.

WHERE: Seminars take place at the regional office in Latham unless otherwise indicated.

WHO: These seminars are available exclusively to NYSUT members, including newer and veteran educators and school-related professionals.

COST: All Learning Center seminars are FREE to NYSUT members.

Creating A Culturally Responsive Classroom (WKS ELL10)

CTLE Hours: 3 units

In order to meet the needs of our diverse student population, educators must possess the mindset and skills needed to foster a positive learning environment for all students as it is critical to their academic success. Culturally responsive instructional practices honor and support this diversity, connecting learning to students' cultural and linguistic background while building on prior experiences. As a result, educators create an inclusive environment that is accessible and relatable to all students. (3 hours)

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Adjusting the Educational Image (WKS PROF 71)

Ending the achievement gap between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers requires addressing the essential factors that can influence their success. This three-hour training provides up-to-date information on the clinical and associated features of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), including Asperger's Disorder. Attention will be given to how these disorders manifest themselves and present unique instructional and learning challenges within education settings. The seminar goes beyond the core features of the disorder and covers evidence-based proactive strategies for helping children and adolescents with ASDs succeed in school.

This seminar fulfills the state requirements for the three-hour Autism Training in the Needs of Children with Autism pursuant to Sections 3004(4) and (5) of the Education Law and Subpart 57-3 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. (3 hours)

About Learning Center Seminars

NYSUT Learning Centers offer a host of site-based seminars and training on a broad spectrum of topics and for a range of educators, including both teachers and school-related professionals.

Whether you are a newer teacher (up to 5 years of classroom experience) or a veteran educator, you will find a wide variety of professional learning opportunities that can be used for growth or certification fulfillment.

ELT offers seminars for newer teachers on such topics as classroom management and student engagement. Topics for School-Related Professionals include ways to handle challenging student behavior. All educators will find the seminars on LGBTQ topics and meeting the language acquisition needs of English language learners very helpful.

While each Learning Center location offers specific seminars tailored to regional needs and interests, all participants will enjoy a great experience from the knowledgeable and dynamic ELT instructors who help us adhere to the "members teaching members" model.
