Proactively Confronting Trauma in the Classroom and Other Learning Spaces (WKS SRP57)

CTLE Hours: 3 units

Students are affected by their experiences and impacted by the situations and events that they witness. Exposure to trauma and traumatic events often create social, emotional and behavioral problems that can hinder academic progress.

This seminar will provide School-Related Professionals (SRPs) with an understanding of how trauma affects students and offer an opportunity to develop strategies to support and promote school wide success. (3 hours)

Mindfulness in the Classroom (WKS SRP54)

Audience: SRPs
Instructor: Mary Naer

Location: Remote

CTLE Hours: 3 units

Participants will explore the definition of mindfulness and how it relates to whole child instruction in the classroom. Scenarios and strategies will be used to introduce techniques that will address trauma and other factors that may lead to stress felt by today's students and/or educators. The seminar's interactive activities will model how these techniques can be implemented in a teacher's practice. The content will be mindful of the diverse learners and backgrounds present in a classroom. Participants will have an opportunity to prepare next steps needed to integrate mindfulness into their daily routines. (3 hours) Participants will receive an email the day of their seminar with instructions how to login to this virtual seminar.


About Learning Center Seminars

NYSUT Learning Centers offer a host of site-based seminars and training on a broad spectrum of topics and for a range of educators, including both teachers and school-related professionals.

Whether you are a newer teacher (up to 5 years of classroom experience) or a veteran educator, you will find a wide variety of professional learning opportunities that can be used for growth or certification fulfillment.

ELT offers seminars for newer teachers on such topics as classroom management and student engagement. Topics for School-Related Professionals include ways to handle challenging student behavior. All educators will find the seminars on LGBTQ topics and meeting the language acquisition needs of English language learners very helpful.

While each Learning Center location offers specific seminars tailored to regional needs and interests, all participants will enjoy a great experience from the knowledgeable and dynamic ELT instructors who help us adhere to the "members teaching members" model.
